As I adjust and learn my surroundings here, I’ve been delighted to find that I am about midway between two really excellent library systems, the Las Vegas Clark County Libraries, and Henderson Libraries. I’ve always loved libraries, and these are proving to be no exception. In fact, they are both really exceptional!
I’ve really enjoying getting back into reading, and reading a lot. With the 100+ degree days already begun here, reading is a perfect activity.
Over the years I’ve read many of the J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) In Death books. But I never seem to be able to get all of them, in order, at any one time or place. I’ve always wanted to read them all, in order. It looks like between these two wonderful libraries, I now have the opportunity to do that. So that’s my big personal readathon for this summer – or however long it takes. I just finished Immortal In Death (book 3) and it looks like I’m going to be able to pace it around 3 books a week. It takes as long as it takes, it’s just a personal desire to finally get to read them all in order.
One of the libraries has a big splash page trying to get everyone on a summer readathon. Well, everyone under 18. Another blogger I love to read (And if you love books, you should too; Biblionyan) was talking about readathons the other day and the light went on in my often dim brain to look for readathons online.
Which is why I am now signed up for two !
This readathon runs over July 20-21 and asks that you spend 24 of those 48 hours reading. Yes, put the phone down. LOL. This segues nicely with a discussion the hubby and I are having about choosing one weekend a month or so to go “analog”. Play tabletop games, read, etc. In fact, he’s even doing the readathon with me.
And all that reading time will surely give me a jump on the other readathon; The #IronTomeAthon. I’m particularly excited about this one. I love adult fantasy, and I don’t read much of it anymore. It runs from July 1st to July 31st and is pretty relaxed. I like that, too. Like – this is my announcement post here. Let me add that I have decided on House Targaryen. And I have The Poppy War on hold and it should be here before July 1st.
Maybe unwisely, I thought I’d just go browse in the library to chose my books. My plan is to read one of the fantasy books between every 3 or so In Death books – because I discovered long ago that too many In Death books in a row gets boring. So I set out to choose about 4 to 6 books, maybe including one or two graphic novels.
I noticed a few things. Like, no fantasy author is allowed to write stand alone books now. Everything has to be a series. And there seems to be an unwritten rule that says only books 2 and 3 of any trilogy can be actually in the library. Or book 12. I didn’t get to follow the prompts as closely as I would like, but these are the six I’ve come up with so far.
A couple of old friends – but books of theirs I actually have not read yet (!)
Companions on the Road by Tanith Lee
The Eye of the Heron by Ursula K. LeGuin
And new friends –
Twelve Kings of Sharakhai by Bradley P. Beauliue (Sunspear and Kings Landing prompts)
Kill the Farm Boy by Delilah S. Dawson and Kevin Hearne (supposed to be comedic and punny – I thought it would be good to get a nice, light one in)
The City of Lost Fortunes by Bryan Camp (They had me at New Orleans)
Kitty’s House of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn (yes, book 7 in a series but I’ll try it as a standalone) (Asshai challenge maybe)
I’d still like to find a book for the Valyria challenge (dragons) and Oldtown (school) but I also don’t want to get too many piled up in the TBR for this, so it depends on what I can find in the other great library when I get by there. They have a big selection on graphic novels, so maybe I can come up with a couple of those. I’m not too worried about points or winning anything, just reading along and having fun.
Updates will be posted here (probably as I finish each book), My Twitter account @VegasPixie and my Facebook account. I also have a new Goodreads account as well as a new account at Litsy. I noticed there is a whole group at Litsy for Readathons, too.
We will see how this goes and if it’s fun then I might look for more Readathons in the future. Meanwhile, friend me, follow me, whatever.
And BTW – tomorrow is my birthday! I’ll be (gasp) sixty!
